GUERRILLA MARKETING FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

COST EFFECTIVE MARKETING STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE BUSINESS

What Is Guerrilla Marketing

It's a battle getting your business noticed, branded, and recognized as an authority of your industry.  When it  comes to marketing the city can feel like a jungle out there and if your like many starting out you have more time on your hands than money to throw out , but guerrilla marketing is not as scary as it sounds.   The concept is to keep your marketing budget at a minimal cost using unconventional grassroots marketing concepts.

We're here to help with some great ideas to get started.  To keep the momentum you're going to need ongoing off-site SEO services and on-page search engine optimizations.

Guerrilla Marketing Ideas

Here we'll start with some easy to do basics and move into more complex concepts that might take a little more time and money to create.  The goal is brand recognition for inbound marketing.  For some of these you will be asking your friends and family to be helping out.  You might want to throw a cookout as a thank you to get them on board.

To get started you're going to need a Professional Company Website This is a must! If you don't have a responsive website then your all your marketing will fall flat. In today's marketplace most everyone goes online first and if you don't have an effective website you've already lost over half your potential customers, even if you have a brick and mortar storefront. Your website not only needs to be informative it also needs to encourage your audience to take the next step in becoming a customer.  All your marketing will lead to your website in one form or another.

Video Marketing

Videos create a down to earth personal experience with your viewers and potential customers. Depending on your industry create video tips, tricks, how to's and events (we'll get into event later). To make your videos stand out you don't need any special effects or high end cameras, just use your phone, a small tripod, and natural light. We all remember the Sham Wow guy. Fast talking, informative, and fun to watch again and again.  That was all for a towel.  No matter your industry, with the right does, don'ts, and a few creative examples you're on your way.   Just make sure you also optimize your videos on YouTube. Here are some apps and links that will help you get you started and on your way.
Note:  If you are using a Mac I suggest just using iMovie.  Easy to learn and use.  For windows users try starting with windows movie editor.  Like iMovie this should come pre-installed on your system.

Social Media Marketing

How to use social media announcements.  Getting help from your friends and family is effective and genuine.  Get a group that will commit to liking, sharing, and engaging from time to time (keeping professional not personal).  Start by creating business accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and possibly Twitter.  Plan on a 14 day bombardment of content (one post per day) and then two to three posts a week for about three months.  It's best to create as many of these posts ahead of time as you can so you can move onto other marketing ideas, and have them pre-scheduled using Facebook or an app that will handle all your preset postings.  Creating post may seem difficult at first but as you start to dig in it will get easier and easier.  However, don't just create advertisements and always use visuals.   Try to be informative and inquisitive getting your audience to engage.  Make sure to respond, after all it is meant to be social.  Don't forget to incorporate any videos you have created.   Here are some apps and links to make this process a little easier.
Note:  There are many apps and software out there.  For the best stock photos and videos there's going to be a monthly cost added.  Adobe Spark has a monthly cost but works great on saving time with, layouts, ideas and formats.

Easy Email Marketing

Once again using your friends and family to help deliver your message.  Start with creating a small handful of compelling emails.  Get your friends on board to share with their friends.  This not only helps with brand awareness it also comes with a side of trust built in.  Don't get greedy and only use this a few times.  You'll need your friends help again in the future and you don't want to burden them.  Make sure to use imagery, bold headers and linked highlighted content that points back to your website.  People are weary of attachments.  Just don't use them unless necessary.  Here's some great blogs on email marketing advice.

Mastery of the Business Card

Usually the first thing you thought of when starting out were the business cards you would have for potential customers.  But what do you do with them?  In most every industry your suppliers have a storefront, your bank may have a cork board, and your friends have jobs.  Start getting them placed in as many places as possible.  Don't be shy, whenever you meet someone hand them your card.  These are small and effective little billboards that will float around in peoples wallets, cars, and homes for possibly years.  Don't forget to give a few to every friend to carry.

Yard Signs and Fliers - Moving Billboards

Have a few professional yard signs made and temporarily place them in friends and families yards that have some basic street traffic going by.  Adding a flier tube with additional information is a great way of building interest and engagement to a target audience.  Don't leave your signs out more than a week or two in each yard.  After that they have become part of the landscape and ineffective.

Sponsoring A Road

Road sponsorship is a great guerrilla marketing tactic to really get some free publicity that is not to often used.  Not only does this create brand recognition, it's a great way to show you care about your community.  The fun part is you will have a permanent sign posted on the street with your company name listed as the sponsor for drivers to view daily.  Purchase some orange vests at your local hardware store, or my favorite, Freight Harbor.  Using black sticker lettering, place your company name on the back of each vest.  Get a couple of yard signs with your logo and company name with the caption like "Cleaning Up In Progress" or "Keeping Our Community Clean".  Pick a busy commuting time like rush hour to get the most out of it.  Getting any coworkers and a few friends and you can create a branding community event.  Make sure to get plenty of pictures and fun videos and tell social media about the great experience and feeling you get contributing to your community.  Just be careful not to sound bragging.  Don't forget to supply water and payback your volunteers with food and drinks at the end of it all.  And again,  photograph everything  to see what looks great later.

Become An Award Winner

Depending on your niche this idea may not be as easy to find.  Look for anywhere online that you could win an award in your niche that offers digital badges to be placed on your website.  Even if the award is small it still helps build authority and a little SEO.  Research the requirements  to qualify and get started.

Charitable Donations

Helping in your community and giving to charities is always a win win.  Start with social media and get people involved on which local charity you should start sponsoring.  This is a great way to show you care, get an audience to interact, and build brand recognition.
  • Local Schools
  • Food Pantries
  • Soup Kitchens
  • Orphanages
Note:  Try offering a discount with every donation.  This helps make people feel better about using your services and you really get to help those in need.

The Free Gift of eBooks

Easy to create and a great way to build authority and brand recognition. Ebooks can be used for offering advice on how to accomplish DIY goals.  Use these on your website to collect email addresses for further brand marketing and promotions.

DIY SEO

DIY SEO: Last but not least.  Search engine optimzation has it's own guerilla marketing strategies that require a little more time and skills to get your website off the ground.  However, If you've created videos and social media accounts you've already taken your first steps. Search engine optimization is what is going to really drive traffic long term to your business but this doesn't happen over night. The internet is like a big ocean and doesn't know you exist. It is best to hire a company that will take care of this but since the work takes time to see the progress it's probably the scariest part of the marketing. Hiring the wrong company can cost hundreds and even thousands of dollars being wasted. You should do your homework, ask lots of questions, and make sure to see proven results before hiring.
In the meantime let's get started on what SEO you can do yourself. Local directories are a great place to get started. These are known as local citations. Also, get your business listed on Google My Business and Bing. Make sure to submit your sitemaps to both which tells search engines what you're all about. Below are some links to get you started. Competition in the business world is stiffer than ever. New technology has made it possible for a lot more people to get their feet wet in the marketing game, and we are seeing the effects of an open playing field. Most of the email sent today is junk mail and spam. Auto-dialers are making more unwanted phone calls than ever.

One of the many new concepts that the Internet has brought to the world of marketing and branding is social sharing. While people in the pre-Internet age have proudly proclaimed their affinity for particular brands via things like clothing or tattoos, social media has made it easier than ever for them to endorse a product or brand, simply by clicking the “Share” button to send branded content to their followers’ feeds.

Search engine optimization tools often operate on a global scale, maximizing your business’ rank for your keywords whenever anyone almost anywhere plugs them into a search engine. But SEO is just as important for small, local businesses as it is for big multinational firms.
