4 Ways to Diversify Your Content Syndication to Increase Website Visitors

Aug 08, 2018

Syndicating content on your website is a proven method of boosting your site’s traffic. For one thing, Google’s algorithms are set up to reward content that’s authoritative and relevant, and if you’re syndicating from the right sources, that means your site will show up higher in search results. That means increases in organic traffic, more eyes on your site, and more people clicking through to learn more about your site, subscribing to your email list, and potentially buying a product if your site has a store. And this style of marketing can be tweaked in a number of ways to maximize results. Here are four ways to diversify your content to keep your traffic growing.

1. Vary the Length Of Your Articles

Many sites settle into a rut, where they’re consistently syndicating content from a few sources, and thus posting a lot of similar articles, of similar lengths. You might think your site benefits most from quick-hit articles that people can digest quickly, under the assumption that when they’re done reading, they’ll quickly navigate elsewhere on your site. But studies have shown that longform content actually retains readers better. The more time they spend on your site, even if they’re just diving deep into one long read, the more likely they’ll be to check out other things. Alternatively, if you post mostly longform stuff and your traffic has plateaued, syndicate some shorter articles. Short and long articles attract different audiences, and that’s what diversification is all about.

2. Try Different Types of Media

You shouldn’t feel tied down to any particular type of content. With the vast array of media available to be syndicated, sticking to one thing unnecessarily limits the appeal of your site and the avenues you can receive traffic through. Don’t be afraid to syndicate a podcast, a slideshow, or an interesting infographic, even if your site has previously stuck to written articles. YouTube videos are also a major traffic magnet.

3. Reach Out to Your Readers

You can increase your readers’ engagement with your site and potentially attract new traffic by syndicating content from your readers themselves! Post an article inviting readers to submit their own articles on a particular topic. Of course, you’ll need to put more work into editing and sifting through these pieces than you will for content from a trusted syndication source, but the amplifying effect this will have on your community is worth it.

4. Look for Niche Social Networks

The inherent tribalism of human beings is visibly expressed online. People love joining groups that represent their interests or career aspirations. And these groups can be a pre-selected target market for your content. Scour Facebook and Instagram for groups or hashtags related to the main topic of your site, then cross-post your content to these sites or using these hashtags. If you can establish yourself as the authority on a subject that one of these groups is interested in, you’ll earn yourself a loyal and consistent audience.

If your content strategy has stalled out, and you’re not seeing a steady increase in visitors, you might want to consider switching up your syndication strategy. The suggestions above are just a few ways you can vary your syndication style to keep growing your audience.
